Mondeo ST could make a comeback

• Ford considers high-performance Mondeo
• Car likely to have high-powered diesel engine
• Unlikely to go on sale before the start of 2009

Ford is considering a high-performance range-topper for the new Mondeo, but it won't go on sale for at least 18 months.

The old Mondeo's line-up was headed by the ST, which had sporty looks, stiffened suspension and a choice of petrol or diesel power. The ST badge is missing from the new range, but that could change by the end of 2008.

If a new ST does get the green light, expect it to be diesel-powered. 'Towards the end of the old model's life, sales were split 80/20 in favour of diesel,' said Steve Adams, Ford's vehicle line director for large and luxury cars. 'If we do build a new ST, it would be a diesel, although there could be a petrol version as well.'

Several different engines from within the Ford group could find their way under the bonnet. Volvo's D5, which puts out a healthy 178bhp, would be one option, as would a highly tuned version of the Mondeo's 138bhp 2.0-litre diesel. Most intriguing of all, however, is the prospect of shoehorning Jaguar's 203bhp 2.7-litre under the bonnet.

The ST isn't the only likely addition to the Mondeo range. Expect to see a green, flexible-fuel Mondeo, designed to run on a mixture of ethanol and petrol, by next spring.
